Quotes for writers

Today I thought I’d simply share some of my favourite quotes concerning the art of writing.  I find them excellent touchstones in the writing process.

A little can say so much

A little can say so much

Less is more

* As he knew what to say, so he knows also when to leave off; a continence which is practiced by few writers …. (John Dryden)

* So the writer who breeds more words than he needs, is making a chore for the reader who reads. (Dr Seuss)

Don’t insult the reader

* The book to read is not the one that thinks for you, but the one that makes you think. (Harper Lee)

Making much out of the little

* Referring to Jane Austen’s work: Nothing very much happens in her books, and yet, when you come to the bottom of a page, you eagerly turn it over to learn what will happen next. Nothing very much does and again you eagerly turn the page. The novelist who has the power to achieve this has the most precious gift an author can possess. (W. Somerset Maugham)

You could just end up a Jane Austen or a Brontë :-)

The outer suggests the inner

* It is, of course, one of the skilful arts of these portraits to work with surfaces and make the surfaces convey and reveal what lies beneath…. (Arthur W. Hoffman)

Uriah Heep. Dickens is my hero when it comes to villains you love to hate.
