Favourite quote #1: “Authenticity is the most disingenuous form of narcissism.”

Lord Whimsy

This quote (which I’m sure you’ll agree is a winner) comes from the most delightful little green hardback that I bought as a gift for someone but then ended up refusing to part with. The book is entitled The Affected Provincial’s Companion, Vol. 1 (2006), and is authored by Lord Breaulove Swells Whimsy.

The sub-title is glorious:

A Bounteous Selection of

Essays, PHILOSOPHICAL DIAGRAMS, POETRY,

and Other Arcadian Follies Concerning the

Art of CURIOUS LIVING and

the  Reintroduction of ANCIENT CHARM

into This Vale of Mud and Tears

Known Heretofore as the MODERN LIFE

I love the way Lord Whimsy’s mind works, and I cannot recommend his writings enough for those wanting a fun diversion that also leaves you feeling you’ve exercised your mind a little in following his magniloquent arguments.

He has short essays on topics such as:

–          Dandyism vs. Foppery

–          On the Perils of Sportswear

–          My Love Spurneth Yams

Finally, I’ll share the opening page:

It is unbecoming for young men to utter maxims.

–Aristotle

Oops.

–Lord Whimsy
